Profile: Mark Thompson
Company: AnalogX

Opens: 27 June 2008
Closes: 27 July 2008
Prize value: US$300.00

Details:

I need a logo for a new website which will be launching shortly – the premise of the website is pretty straight-forward, it’s a kind of TV Show rating website, similar to the Nielsen tracking done for normal TV. Unlike the Nielsen’s that gather their data by hooking up a device to the TV, what my site does is actively track P2P networks and calculates the demand for different shows based on how active they are traded.

The logo should be professional looking – it will be used pretty much exclusively online, so I’m not concerned with how well it works in print. From a graphic elements standpoint, a couple concepts that it would be great if it could convey would be: peer-to-peer, statistics, internet and television. I’m primarily interested in a graphic logo, but if it also incorporates text as well (such as the name), that’s fine.

As with my previous competitions, I will also be awarding a 2nd place of $200 and a 3rd place of $100, so you really have three chances to win. :) I will also more than likely contract with the winning designer to do the design for the website as well, so that’s an extra bonus (I don’t need any html/css, just pure design).

Great feedback Mark.

By AnalogX over 5 months ago

First off thanks to everyone for being patient on me selecting the winners on this one – moving is never easy. :) Thanks to everyone who submitted a logo for this compo, there were some really great ones and at the end it was pretty close. That being said, here’s the winner:

finkpink

The design is very clean, the use of the color bars as a graphing element is brilliant. Both treatments look great, but the consensus was for this one.

Second place goest to:

joe_wms9767

And finally, third goes to:

marzy

Once again, thanks for everyone who took the time to design a logo, all of them are appreciated!

Sorry for the delay in selecting the winners, I’ve been moving this week, but I will select them by the end of the weekend. Thanks for everyone’s patience and especially for the great submissions. :)

Ok, here are my thoughts on the next round of submissions – there were some really cool ones in this latest batch! I’m going to highlight a couple that stood out for me, and what about them stood out for me:

cloptic

I like how the W is incorporated into the screen, and also has a bit of the graph-vibe to it. I feel like it might almost stand alone better (not being the W in Show), but it’s hard to say.

omixam

Woohoo! A design that definitely has a bit of the P2P vibe! :) I like the different design approach on the TV, making it round and more stylized.

argentina

I’m not sure what exactly it is about this design, but I like it… The use of color is cool, the way the text is combined into the color areas looks really nice, and it’s got a very clean/simple feel to it.

marzy

One of the comments summarizes this one pretty well; “wow!” :) VERY nice logo – clean lines, not too busy and really interesting. The font choice for the title goes well also – the bold/normal to delineate the two words works particularly well in this case. It would be interesting to see some different rainbow ranges, to see if something else worked better…

Shorty

This one is also very nice – it uses the same bold/normal to delineate the name, but with greater kerning which looks nice with this design. I like the idea of multiple screens, giving the impression of ‘inside’, very nice.

Great work so far, it looks like this is going to be another tough decision when it’s all over! :)

Anywho, now that all that fun is over, let’s deal with what we’re all here for, logo design! :)

First off thanks for everyone who has submitted logos so far, there are some really great ones, and some really creative ideas. As always, Logosauce has beaten my expectations. :)

A couple things to keep in mind; there were several designs that include design elements that are more associated with film than television – since my site deals exclusively with TV, I want to avoid that as much as possible (so please no film cels, strips, etc).

It would be nice if there was a bit more of a connection in the logos with P2P, but that’s a pretty abstract concept, so I’m not sure if that’s even feasible. :)

Ok, on to the specific comments on ones that stood out to me:

finkpink version2

VERY cool idea of using the color bars to give the impression of graphs/statistics. Nice clean design, I like the open elements which while making it clear what the shape is, make it more interesting in their absence. While both logos are similar, I lean more towards the isometric one.

onesummer

For me this one gave the best sense of P2P (in this instance, many things combining together) – while there were others that took more of an orbiting approach, I felt this one was a bit more visually interesting. The little rabbit ears on the top help to establish the TV aspect – the downside of this is that if I just saw the logo by itself, I would be pretty unsure as to what it was, but I would probably guess something TV-related.

ecodezign

This is pretty simple, but I like the concept and it certainly works on the whole ‘insider’ theme while the shape hints at a television (at least to me).

mia*

For me this design brings to mind one of the TV entertainment shows, like Entertainment Tonight or something similar. The TV integrated into the O doesn’t work as well for me, but I like the alternative font for the I.

PIXELJUICE

I like the retro look of this one, although the brand isn’t SOWINSIDER – maybe some other farming project you’re working on? :) While it doesn’t have any P2P elements, I think the television and statistics elements (which are more important) stand out very well with this design.

Hopefully this feedback gives everyone a bit more idea of what I’m after and what stands out on some of the existing designs. I would also recommend going with a bit more of a commercial/professional feel with the designs – most of the ones I highlighted definitely do.

The irony of this whole thing is that all I am trying to do is make it so that more than one person gets something out of my competitions. When I first did this, I actually told the Logosauce guys my intention, and he thought it sounded cool – he actually said that it might get more people to just make it a $600 prize, but personally I thought it would be cooler to spread it around some – especially after looking at some of the profiles of some REALLY talented artists on here who have no competition wins. What I personally DON’T want to see happen is someone who’s really talented, and is basically in the running to win the competition then doesn’t get something. I’m not rich or good looking, so I can’t do much, but I can at least give something more – and hopefully that recognition gets that person not only participates in my future competitions, but also keeps him from getting discouraged and giving up on design.

Nic, I think that you’re being disingenuous when you say that you weren’t assuming the worst; if that wasn’t the case, why would you say you weren’t going to participate, state that you were insulted and then provide me with a link on ethics? :)

Either way, for those who participate and win 2nd or 3rd on any of my competitions, feel free to call BS on me if I ever ask for anything other than your email address to paypal the money to.

By cloptic over 6 months ago

Nic, those were some pretty strong words without getting clarification first. Before you decide to “champion the cause” and scare off possible good, solid competition holders, ask yourself 2 things.

1: “have I gotten all the details needed to make an informed decision?”

2: “do all the designers NEED me to protect them, or can they make informed decisions for themeselves?”

this might help to keep you from making us all sound like bitter snobs.

no offense.

I’ve done this one two previous competitions without anyone feeling that way. If you notice, I don’t require that I get the artwork or anything similar – some of the previous winners have sent them, some haven’t – it’s purely their choice. When someone get’s second or third place, I email them letting them know what they’ve won and ask for their paypal – I send them the cash and that’s usually that’s it. The reason I decided to do it was because I felt it was nice to do something for some of the other people who submitted designs and to recognise what they did in a more tangible way – and hopefully they would continue to compete in my future competitions. The person who wins ends up usually doing more work with me (typically the site design), so I thought that at the end of the way it was better to spread the love around a bit more.

Thanks for assuming the worst of my intentions and not even bothering to just email me and ask.
